The Grand Café, Oxford

Allegedly the first coffee house in England, the Grand Café now serves much more than just coffee. Living up to its name, it feels grand but its largely student-based clientele steers it away from pretentious ground. I hear good things about the lunches and cocktails there and have made a mental note to try out their afternoon tea at some point as on this occasion I had already made up my mind to visit The Randolph.

I drink my coffee black so it is possibly even more important that the coffee is of a good standard. I went for a Dark Columbian press but wished I had spent the extra few bob on trying out their Blue Mountain Jamaica (has anyone tried it?). Nonetheless, the coffee was above average, quite strong – just the way I like it.
